Your Guide to Getting Your First Brazilian Wax
Tired of your “hair down there” but not interested in laser hair removal? Maybe you’re still a little unsure about the whole Brazilian waxing process? Don't worry, we totally understand – it’s a feeling that most of us have been through before making the plunge into the waxing lifestyle.
If you’re still uncertain, you’re in the right place! Here at That Beauty Spot, we want to make sure that all of our clients feel confident in the choices they make with their body – that’s why we’ve cultivated this guide to Brazilian waxing.
How do you properly prepare for your first Brazilian wax?
Before we get to the physical process of removing your pubic hair, let’s get familiar with the preparation needed before your brazilian or bikini wax appointment.
No matter who you are, or where you are, following these basic steps prior to your wax will ensure a smooth, seamless waxing appointment.
Make sure your pubic hair is grown out to at least a quarter inch
Regardless of where your hair is being removed – under your arms, around the pubic bone, on your legs, or even on your back – it is critical that your hair is at least a quarter of an inch long. The length of hair plays a large part in the success of your wax as the hair needs to be long enough for the wax to adhere to. Don’t worry about it being too long, though. If necessary, your esthetician will trim your hair down before starting your wax.
If you’re ever unsure about the length of hair, try to compare your regrowth to a single grain of rice.
Take a soothing hot bath or shower right before your appointment to open up your pores
Outside of hygienic purposes, taking a bath or shower before your appointment can actually help your waxing session go smoothly. The warm water will allow your pores to open, making the extraction process easier. It will also allow both hard wax and soft wax to easily adhere to the strands of hair as any build up of dirt and body oil will be removed.
Gently exfoliate no less than 24 hours prior to your appointment
In addition to clean skin, exfoliating can help wax better adhere to your skin. Exfoliating around 2 days prior to your waxing session helps remove the layers of dead, dry skin that have accumulated. It is important, however, to refrain from exfoliating for at least 24 hours leading up to your appointment.
What happens during your wax appointment?
With preparation covered, let’s go over the actual events that take place during your waxing appointment. Nothing says ease of mind like knowing exactly what’s about to happen and how it will be carried out.
Your wax specialist will have you get comfortable on the table and talk with you about your preferences
First, your esthetician will invite you in and ask you what your expectations are for your wax. Discuss what you want to accomplish and ask any outstanding questions during this time. They’ll make you feel comfortable and welcome!
Your preferred wax areas will be cleansed and given a pre-wax treatment like an oil or powder
Once everyone is on the same page, your esthetician will have you undress below the waist and cleanse the area being waxed with a towelette. Depending on your waxing needs, some oil or powder may be applied to the area prior to the hair removal process.
Your esthetician gets to work, waxing your skin with delicacy and precision
Here comes the wax! Once you’re ready, the wax will be strategically applied to the area and your hair removal process will be underway! The technician should work with skill and precision to bring you a smooth, hair-free finish!
Now that the hard part is over, you will be cleaned off and sent home with some helpful pieces of advice to ensure your skin stays happy and healthy in the weeks to come.
Other frequently asked questions about Brazilian waxing
During our time as professional waxers, there’s some frequently recurring questions we get asked about the waxing process. To make things simple and informative, we’ve included our top three questions that we think may help you make an informed decision.
Can you get waxed on your period?
For those on their menstrual cycle, waxing may still be an option without any negative side effects. Although the area may be slightly more sensitive than normal, a brazilian waxing appointment can still be completed if a new tampon is in place during your session.
Is it safe to get a Brazilian wax while pregnant?
Yes! Since waxing only affects the exterior skin, your baby-to-be is at no risk of harm. Simply ensure that you are not allergic to any of the wax materials being used prior to your appointment.
Will piercings and tattoos impact my ability to get waxed?
For those with tattoos and piercings, you can still get waxed. We do, however, recommend removing any body jewelry prior to waxing to get the best results.
