A Little Forever with Permanent Jewelry
Are you the type of person who loves accessorizing, but is either too sentimental or too forgetful to ever really want to put any jewelry on? I don't know about you, but one of our biggest concerns is damaging our favorite pieces due to wearing them so much, or finding out I've left my expensive jewelry somewhere while traveling. Fortunately for us, permanent jewelry has become such an available option that we no longer need to worry about that happening because, well, it’s permanent!
If you’re not familiar with permanent jewelry, that’s fine! Here at That Beauty Spot, we’re here to put you on to the amazing benefits that come with getting your own piece of sentimentality.
The origin of permanent jewelry
While you may think that this line of jewelry is new to the market because of trending videos on Instagram and TikTok, the reality is that the concept of permanent jewelry has been around for quite some time: just in varying forms.
How did permanent jewelry come to be?
Curating a permanent fashion accessory was more than just an idea to aid those who lose their necklaces and bracelets regularly. In fact, the concept of permanent jewelry is often marketed as something that can be shared with a friend or loved one: something to bring people together. Traces of this concept can easily date back to Cartier’s 1969 Love Bracelet. This bracelet was seen as “permanent” as the only way it could be removed is via a screwdriver.
A few years and varying concepts later, we’ve been gifted with the beauty of permanent necklaces, anklets, belts, and bracelets.
Is permanent jewelry related to piercing?
The simple answer is: NO. It is quite common for people to hear permanent jewelry and think of the piercings known as dermals. These permanent (not easily removed) body accessories are implanted into your skin and have no correlation to the permanent jewelry we are discussing.
Every piece of permanent jewelry offered here at That Beauty Spot will always be placed on the exterior of the body and will never be placed within the skin.
Can permanent jewelry work for me?
When it comes to who can and can't partake in this fashionable trend, it really just comes down to allergies. While it is uncommon to have allergies to metals like gold and silver, if you know you have allergies to such metals, it is best to see if there are alternate options available. Thankfully, you can get your jewelry gold plated if you find yourself sensitive to the other metal options offered. Additionally, since the product is custom fit to the wearer, there are no real limitations on who can and cannot wear them as each piece should sit comfortably.
Please remember that individuals working in positions requiring manual labor may be at risk for additional wear and tear on their custom piece.
How does the process of permanent jewelry work?
Permanent jewelry works with a process affectionately coined as “zapping”. Zapping is when the jeweler uses a soldering tool to bind both ends of the piece of jewelry together. Before any of this takes place, though, your material of choice is selected and the jewelry piece is customized to your liking. Customization includes the length of the piece as well as the chain type and any jewels you want to add.
Note: There is a non-refundable deposit required when booking your appointment. The application process and cost of materials is also non-refundable, but your technician may be able to work with you if something happens to your new piece.
Does the permanent jewelry application hurt?
Even though the term “zapping” sounds intimidating, there is nothing scary or painful about the process. As long as this application is completed by a professional trained in using the soldering tool, you should feel nothing during the process.
How do I take off or adjust my jewelry?
Although the name suggests you are unable to remove your jewelry, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to take it off, rest assured that it is possible! While removing it may not be as simple as unclasping or unlocking the chain, it can still be completed at home. Simply take a pair of pliers and break the connecting link in order to remove the piece. If you need to adjust the jewelry (sometimes it can feel too loose or too tight after a few days of wear), you can go back to your jeweler and request that they adjust it for you.
Are there any serious precautions that I should take?
Unfortunately, there are going to be times in which removing your jewelry is going to be a requirement. If you have to undergo an MRI, it is critical that you remove all your jewelry or else you could risk serious injury.
In addition, if you know that you will be undergoing a surgery in the near future, please read up on any potential requirements. If you are ever unsure, feel free to go over any outstanding concerns you may have with us!
